Service
"Let us hold unwaveringly to our confession that gives us hope, for he who made the promise is trustworthy. We must consider how to rouse one another to love and good works. We should not stay away from our assembly... but encourage one another."
Hebrews 10:23-25
Our common baptism equips Christians to engage in two fundamental activities: worship and service. The two go hand in hand. Worship without a commitment to service becomes empty words and gestures. Service separated from worship is disconnected from the spirit of Christ. A genuine Christian community includes both.
Here at St. Gregory's we are blessed to have opportunities for spirited, life-giving worship and hands-on service.
Social Care
This parish organization reaches out to members of the parish and the community. Throughout the year, members of the Social Care team visit homebound neighbors, friends, and parishioners, visit the sick in the area hospitals, and host an annual luncheon with entertainment for senior citizens. They also organize a yearly golf outing to raise money to support their work. Sr. Barbara Quinn, our pastoral associate, is the director of this program. If you are interested in joining her team, Sr. Barbara can be reached at the Parish Center, 773-561-3546.
St. Vincent de Paul Society
St. Gregory the Great Church has a chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society that provides aid to the poor and suffering in our community. One of their yearly traditions is preparing and distributing food baskets for needy families at Thanksgiving. The group meets monthly. For more information on this group, please call the Parish Center, 773-561-3546, or click on the Contact Us icon at the bottom of our home page.
Ministry of Care
Members of this group are parishioners who are commissioned Eucharistic ministers. They distribute the Precious Body of Christ to parishioners and other Catholics in our local area who are homebound, residing in assisted living or extended care settings, or are hospitalized.
As our membership grows and we become aware of needs within our parish and local community that are unmet, our opportunities for service will grow. If you are either a parishioner at St. Gregory the Great or someone who is looking for a parish, and you have an idea for a ministry of service that you would like to help develop at St. Gregory's, contact Fr. Paul Wachdorf, pastor. He can be reached by calling the Parish Center, 773-561-3546
